Nicholas has been within education for over twenty years. From a classroom teacher to an administrator in various settings; he is aware of learning strategies and ways to innovate and accelerate student learning. In both urban and suburban settings, Nicholas has been an advocate for English language learners. He has been an ESL High School Teacher in Chicago, Providence, RI as well as an administrator and department chair. The focus of his efforts is on adding to a teacher’s tool kit as well as building resources and supports to better serve educators and the communities they serve. Nicholas has experience working with DESE, district and local levels within education. The RETELL initiative (Rethinking Equity in the Teaching of English Learners) was developed to address the persistent gap in academic proficiency experienced by EL students. This initiative includes new training and licensure requirements for the Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement, which core academic teachers of ELs and principals/assistant principals and supervisors/directors who supervise or evaluate such teachers must obtain.
